Dear Sir,

After reading letters and reports from Council officers and
Councilors, it is quite clear that they do not know what a shared
space street concept is and just how dangerous they are for many
sections of the community.

The continual statements being made that they work well in Europe
are just not true.

I have chaired the European Blind Unions commission on Mobility
and Transport for the past 14 years. The shared street may work
for drivers ,but they certainly do not work for blind and
partially sighted and deaf blind people.

The concept is that you remove all pavements, all pedestrian
crossings, all signs and railings and other street furniture. The
driver has to make eye contact with the pedestrian .

With a wall to wall flat surface with no kerbs and no crossings,
of course they are dangerous. How can the council say they are
safer.

I am still waiting for a reply from Councilor Tony Cox to my
letter of July 5th. How dare he say those of us who were helping
the public to cross city beach on July 23 that we should have
been arrested . How many more children will be knocked down or
killed before the council wake up and see sense and admit
Hadleigh have made a very costly mistake.

Jill Allen-King O.B.E.

P.S. Watch out Hadleigh, plans are around for you as well.
