Action required halting Morrison’s attempt to destroy local businesses – Please object to the planning application...

Once again one of the four supermarket giants is trying to flex its corporate muscle to the detriment of our town’s embattled small businesses.  As reported in the papers, supermarket giant Morrisons is attempting to force the closure of the hair salon adjacent to its Eastwood store so as to allow it to build an in store cafe.

The company, which controls the leases of the three shop units which links its store to the Loyal Toast pub in Western Approaches have refused to talk to the owner of the ‘Simply Scissors’ salon and instead seems bent on using bully boy tactics to force the business, which has operated for 23 years, out.

Local ward Councillor and Southend Council Cabinet member Mark Flewitt, a loyal customer of 15 years, has demanded that the decision on the application to convert the three units into a cafe be referred to the Council Development Control Committee rather than being left in the hands of planning officers.

The latest information is that the decision on the application will come before the Development Control Committee in February. Please help fight this travesty by lodging an objection to the application, please see below for our step by step guide explaining how to use the councils system for commenting on planning applications.

The last temporary occupation, before we set up permanent camp in February, will take place on Saturday 21st January.

The meeting point is the concourse in Southend Victoria train station, gathering from 1.30pm onwards. At 1.55pm we’ll be making the short journey to the nearby occupy location.

As well as the pop-up tents, Occupy Southend will be deploying a ‘video booth’ where people can express their concerns about the current system we live under, and suggest ideas for change. To reflect this, a youtube channel has been setup to showcase the valuable input of the 99%.

Saturday morning will see the Occupy Southend banner appearing at key locations around the town. So if you’d like to join us ‘on tour’ Saturday morning, please call or email via this website - you’ll be warmly welcomed! And If you have any proposals for action in the future please contact us. We’d appreciate them! See you all on the 21st!

The members of the SKIPP Committee fully supports the aims of the worldwide occupy movement and our local group Occupy Southend.

SKIPP Press Release (09-01-12) Market incompetence

The success of Rayleigh's High Street market stands in sharp contrast to the abysmal failure of Southend's relaunched York Road Market. The booming market in Rayleigh High Street emphasis the incompetence of Southend Borough Council's utter refusal to consider a weekly general Market in our Town's High Street.

During December's full Council meeting the issue of York Road Markets failure and the possibility of a High Street Market was once again raised. In response Deputy Council Leader John Lamb point blank refused to even consider the High Street proposal and even went as far as erroneously claiming that Markets were universally failing throughout the country.

Why despite the undeniable evidence of Rayleigh's success and the boost in business for the shops created by the increased footfall generated by the market, does our Council seem incapable of seeing the very basic business logic of a High Street Market? In fact, why over the past few years has our council enacted policies and taken decisions, parking being a case in point, which appears to be aimed at destroying our High Street?

Either the leaders of the Council, the eight cabinet members, are utterly incompetent and lack any business acumen, or they harbour some nefarious hidden political agenda which we the people are not privy to.
